Something You Did When A Child That You Will Always Remember

Every bi-weekly a member of our team selects a couple of topics to write about...I chose to write about a childhood memory...boy you have to dig deep for those...lol

One of my childhood memories is...My parents would take us (my sisters and brother) to stay with our grandparents in Galveston, TX during the summer for a few days. My grandmother was a really good cook especially her Chicken 'n dumplings, yummmm. Oh how I wish I could have some right now...Anyway, she was also one that didn't like to waste food, so you had to eat everything on your plate. Well one afternoon for lunch she cooked us a hot meal, I can't remember everything that was cooked, but I do remember there was PEAS on my plate. I HATE peas (even still). So, I told her I don't like them, she said, "they are good for you and you will eat them"! There was noway I was going to eat them. I thought I'd be sneaky and put them in my napkin while she wasn't looking. Nope, she made me open my napkin up. Now you can imagine how upset she was. She threw them out, so I thought I was off the hook. NOWAY! She put fresh ones on my plate and told me I had to sit there until they were all gone. I sat there until dinner time....yes dinner time, all day long. So she just added more food to my plate and said I had to finish those peas before I could get up from "her" table. My sisters tried to help me out by saying, "Mom doesn't make her eat them". Grandmother didn't care, this was her house, her rules.....I sat there until bedtime. I was really tired (especially of sitting) and saw my grandmother's bird in it's bird cage. I had to stand on a chair to reach the bird cage because she had it hanging from the ceiling. So I took my peas and put them in the bird food tray (when my grandmother wasn't looking of course) and told her I had finished my peas and my tummy hurt! She just looked at me and said I'd be fine and off to bed....I told my mom when she picked us up and she just laughed. Don't you just love those "grandmothers"....I miss mine.

I don't have a lot of memories of my father's mother - she died when I was very young. I do remember her giving us kids ice cream before dinner, because we loved it so. And I remember the feel of her kitchen, but not the look. Strange, eh?

My maternal grandmother did that to me with a banana flavored popsicle when I was a kid. Us kids were all outside playing and she was visiting. Everyone asked for a popsicle that hot summer day and she gave me the only flavor I hated. I stuck one end of the popsicle stick in a hole in the red bricks surrounding the garden and watched it melt.

I remember burying some vegetables under ketchup one time...didn't work to swell, and I still had to eat them. Yuck!

How funny that you gave them to the bird. Great memory.

That's funny! Too bad you didn't have a dog you could feed it too....

My brother felt the same way about tomatoes. When my dad made him eat one, he just threw up. He never had to eat another tomato again!
